Joeske van Walsum - Chair

Joeske, Rachel and Hans moved to Woodbridge in 2018. After a spell as a professional flute player in his 20s, Joeske set up Van Walsum Management, a company representing artists which launched a number of distinguished careers such as Esa Pekka Salonen, Mitsuko Uchida and Mariss Jansons. Having sold the company in 2008 and spent a year travelling in Europe with their own boat, Joeske and Rachel formed Maestro Arts, a company that manages artists in many disciplines, including music and visual arts. Joeske was Chair of IAMA (International Artist Managers Association) for three exhilarating years. He wants to contribute to the Woodbridge and Melton Society in gratitude for the wonderful environment we have here, something never to be taken for granted.

Liz Huddlestone - Membership Secretary

Liz was born and raised in the Woodbridge & Melton area but left in her early 20s to live abroad. Upon returning she lived in West Suffolk for many years before returning to her roots in Melton. She is keen to know more about Woodbridge and Melton and joined the Society in 2021, offering to help the committee in 2025. Liz has a financial and administrative background, working in agriculture and education during her career.  Now retired she enjoys living in Melton, helping where she can and is an active member of St John’s church in Woodbridge. 

Lindsay Dann - Treasurer

Lindsay Dann - Treasurer elect

Lindsay was raised in Suffolk and returned in 2007 after a career in retail banking. In retirement he managed his local almshouses and a charity providing training to the voluntary sector. He currently volunteers for New Horizons in Woodbridge and was the Melton Parish Tree Warden. He was an officer of the Woodbridge Cruising Club for many years.

Anne Day

Anne Day

Anne has lived in Suffolk since the 1970s and in Woodbridge since 2011. She has worked with a wide range of charitable organisations including MacMillan Cancer Support, Home Start and The Arts Society in Ipswich and across East Anglia. As a co-ordinator with Victim Support for 15 years she was responsible for training volunteers and for organising fundraising events. Anne organises the Society's meetings.

Carol Wiseman

Carole Wiseman

Carol has lived in Woodbridge for 70 years and worked for Neal's Auction Department. Her main interests are gardening and history and she has served on several committees of local societies.  She is a member of Friends of Woodbridge Museum, Grundisburgh History Group, Ipswich Society and the Suffolk Local History Society. She produces the Society's newsletters.

John Saggers

John and his wife Susan moved to Woodbridge in 2015 after 23 years in Little Bealings. John’s career was in commercial property investment and development and, until retirement in 2006, he was a Director of a FTSE 100 property company. After that he was Treasurer of the DYC for some years and, until 2021, a Trustee of a Suffolk Charity, the Kerrison Trust. Currently, his interests include cars and his dog, a Border Collie. He is the chair of the Society's Planning Group.

Pieter Shipster

Pieter moved to Woodbridge in 2010 where the family had owned a property since 1970. After graduating in history at London University he took up a career in public health mainly in the NHS but also in West Africa and the Middle East. For the last 12 years, he has worked for Noble Caledonia as a freelance Travel Tour Manager. He is a volunteer at Woodbridge Museum and is researching the historic centre of Woodbridge and especially Cumberland St. He leads on the Society's Blue Plaque scheme.

Bryony Abbott

Bryony has lived in Melton since 2002 and she joined the parish council in 2007, serving as Chair from 2011 until 2014. She went on to found Melton WI and it is still thriving today. With a degree in English with Anglo-Saxon and Medieval Literature, she is passionate about Sutton Hoo and became a volunteer for the National Trust in 2005. In 2018 she was elected Chair of the Sutton Hoo Society, building links with heritage groups and establishing the SAXON Editorial board for the Society’s Newsletter.  Bryony is a Life Fellow of the RSA and before retiring in 2016 she had a successful career as a human resources professional and freelance Executive Coach, working on Leadership development projects at an international business school.  Bryony is committed to using her skills and experience to advance the aims and purpose of the Woodbridge and Melton Society. 

Stephen Ashworth

Stephen is originally from Manchester and moved to Suffolk in 1980. He retired from teaching mathematics in 2012. Since then he has been involved in the CAB, in witness support at the Magistrates Courts and a brief spell on Melton Parish Council. He is married with two grown up children and six step grandchildren. He enjoys sailing, bridge, dancing and cycling. He is shadowing Lindsay with the intention of taking over as Treasurer.


Cliff Hoppitt

Cliff moved to Woodbridge in 1975 when BT moved to Martlesham from Dollis Hill.  Working on International Standards he presented many papers to international conferences and led key projects including one of the world’s first trials of optical fibre to the home. After retiring in 2000 he worked as a consultant with local councils.  At the same time, he set up a partnership with Dr Sam Newton running Study Days on Anglo-Saxon history. In his leisure time he is a leading figure in the local social dance scene especially in salsa and Argentine tango. Cliff organises the Society's meetings.

Gary Doggett

Gary has lived in Suffolk for 30 years, moving to Woodbridge from Lavenham 7 years ago. His son enjoyed going to school here and playing for Woodbridge Rugby Club. They love the unique character of the town with its history and the river. Gary enjoyed 23 years working for the Ford Motor Company in various roles, mainly in sales & marketing. Since 2004 he has run his own marketing & events company working mainly with clients from the automotive industry and charity sector.

John Bann

John is originally from Greater Manchester and is married with two children and a grandson. Now retired, he worked as a transport planner for local authorities including Gloucestershire, York, Gateshead and Sheffield. His last job was leading on the delivery of a £20m programme of walking and cycling schemes in Nottingham.  John has been a Melton Parish councillor since 2023. As an observer on the Society Committee, he acts as a link between the Society and the Parish Council. He is the Parish representative on the Sizewell C Southern Transport Forum and chairs the Parish Council’s Pavement Group. He is also keen on improving public transport in our area.

Stephen McCrum

Stephen moved from Camden to Woodbridge three years ago when his wife Emily Stubbs became Director of Development at Britten Pears Arts at Snape.  Stephen is an award-winning television producer who loves wild swimming, opera, baroque and jazz music, playing croquet, supporting his wife’s fundraising activities and singing with Woodbridge Choral Society. He has two grown-up children and his great-grandfather invented football’s penalty kick. He is keen to contribute to the life of this wonderful town, especially now that he’s realised that in certain lights the east façade of the Shire Hall resembles Groucho Marx!
